Stone denies abandoning Britain

October 31st, 2008

Stone has refuted reports she has abandoned her native Devon, England in exchange for life in Los Angeles.
Joss has spent a lot of time in the U.S. over the years recording her albums with top producers including Raphael Saadiq.
But Stone insists she would never give up her British home for life abroad.
She says, “Contrary to what is written about me I have not moved to the States. I still live in Devon and have done since I was eight.
“I get homesick for the place even if I’ve been away for two weeks.”

Hannah Pool meets Brittish soul singer Joss Stone

October 30th, 2008

Have you been in the studio much lately? Yeah, I’ve been making the album. It’s fucking great, excuse my language.

What is the mood of the album?
I recorded it in a week, so it’s really raw. If you record any piece of music in the same time that you thought it up, it has this kind of electricity that doesn’t leave it, so it’s very free and every track is different.

Do you worry about the kind of press coverage you get when you come back to the UK?
No, I’m so over it. If I worried about the press I was going to get in England, I’d worry myself into an early grave. No, I can’t be worried about silly things like that, it’s not important.

Why do you think the UK press isn’t always that kind to you?
I don’t really know. Why are they mean to anybody really? I don’t know if there is any good reason to be nasty to somebody who’s just trying to sing and make good music. Is what I do negative and does it hurt people’s feelings? If the answer was yes, then I would understand why they would want to be nasty. But I don’t think the answer is yes. If they don’t like it, then they shouldn’t listen. What I suggest, for the people who do get irritated or annoyed, they should either turn off the television, or turn off the CD player or shut the magazine, and then go on with their day and find something else in their life that makes them happy. I’m not going anywhere, I like making music. I’m going to carry on doing what I do regardless of whether other people are miserable bastards or not.

There was a lot of good feeling towards you at the beginning, you were the West Country girl who did good, and then …
You can’t be mean to a 15-year-old girl. You’re allowed to be mean when they hit 19, so maybe that’s what it was, maybe it was an age-limit thing. “When she gets past this age, we will fucking ruin her,” maybe that’s what it was. But it’s OK, it’s just one little country. I make music for the world, I’m not just making it for England.

Do you regret showing up for the Brits last year [Stone was criticised for her appearance and for adopting an American accent]?
No. What kind of question is that? No.

You’re having a good time in America. what are you doing there?
Exactly the same thing I’m doing here and in France and in Germany and Holland and Japan and Australia: making music. People here think I live in America. I do not. I have not and I will not. There’s the world that I have to go around, and cater to, and sing for.

You started very young. How has the music industry treated you?
It’s treated me well, I’m very happy with the outcome.

Do you think you went into the industry too early?
No. I think I’ve come out of it pretty good. And if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t be me, and I like me right now, I’m good with me.

Do you ever get down?
Yes.

Depressed?
No, not really. I mean, I’m a girl, we all get upset at times. Do you ever get down? Do you ever get depressed? Yeah.

Is it a sexist industry?
The world is a sexist place, I don’t think it’s a sexist industry. Any business is going to be slightly sexist at this point in time. It’s getting less sexist as we go along.

Is it true that when you started in the music business, people in the industry said they weren’t going to sign “a young white girl with a black woman’s voice”?
Yes. People have been very racist [towards me]. It was very shocking. I was 14 when I went over [to America] to get signed, and it just confused me, more than anything. The people who were most racist to me were white. How funny is that? It’s very strange. Hey, you ignore these things, if you dwell on it then you keep it going – the more you talk about it, and the more you label things as black and white. I don’t label music as a colour, or any style as a colour. It’s just a different shade of skin. Come on now people, we’re the same colour inside. It’s like saying, “You have blond hair and I have brown so we’re completely different people.” That’s just bullshit. I hope those people get fixed.

JOSS STONE – STONE KEPT ALBUM RECORDING SECRET FROM LABEL

October 30th, 2008

British soul singer Joss Stone began recording tracks for her forthcoming album in secret – because she didn’t want her label to interfere with the process.

The You Had Me star is signed to EMI, which is now owned by business giant Terra Firma. The takeover in August 2007 resulted in a number of EMI’s biggest artists leaving the label, including Radiohead and the Rolling Stones.

But Stone is tied to the company via her contract and she was determined to make an album that she was truly happy with – so she recorded it without her label chiefs’ knowledge. She says, “I recorded the bulk of my new album in the space of a week in February this year. But it was like a secret – not a secret from the world, but a secret from the record company, because, basically, I didn’t want them f**king with it.”

“EMI was going through a lot of change at the time. It’s a very long story but there aren’t many people left there that I know now.”

“I recorded the album at my mum’s house in Devon. It was like a building site at the time, so it was just me and a crew in two bare rooms with a mic.”

Joss Stone ‘So Nervous’ to Host Christmas at Home

October 30th, 2008

Joss Stone is hosting her family’s Christmas celebration for the first time – and she says she has a lot to live up to.

“I’m having Christmas at my house,” she told reporters at a Hard Rock Café London event to launch the chain’s “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign. “I’m going to host it for the first time and I’m so nervous. My mum did such a great job every year. The tree was gorgeous and all the Christmas presents and the Christmas breakfast.”

Stone, 21, added, “I always stay home for Christmas. I will never ever be away from my family. I love Christmas.”

The singer also spoke about the song she donated to the “Imagine There’s No Hunger” CD. She wrote the tune, “Love Has Made You Beautiful,” when she was 15.

“I think that as a young girl when you’re growing up you think, ‘I want to look like this and I want to be loved,’ ” she said. “You read these magazines and you see these pictures and they’re not real … And you get upset with yourself for not looking like that. But [this song] is about the things that you do with yourself and your life that make you beautiful.”

She added: “If you do something good for the world, you’re a beautiful person. It’s not about the hair and the makeup. That’s all bulls—.”

Stone’s got soul

October 29th, 2008

Imagine There's No HungerSongs by Joss Stone, John Lennon and Bruce Springsteen will all be featured on a new CD which will raise funds to help fight poverty.

The Hard Rock Cafe has launched its global “Imagine There’s No Hunger” campaign, which will benefit WHY (World Hunger Year), a non-profit organization that strives to fight against hunger and poverty around the world.
Yoko Ono has donated John Lennon’s song, Give Peace A Chance, to the Serve3 compilation CD. And the CD also features an exclusive new track by Joss Stone, Love Has Made You Beautiful.

The British soul singer visited the Hard Rock Cafe in London this morning to help launch the campaign.
She said: “I think that if you can help in these situations, then you definitely should. There is no need for millions and millions of people to be dying from hunger. Where we are right now it just doesn’t need to happen.”
Joss explained she wrote the song about a friend when she was 15.

She said: “It’s not about the visual (how someone looks) – it never was and it never will be. It’s about a feeling that comes from you, the words that come out of your mouth, the things you do with your life.

“I believe that in any charity this fits – if you do something good, then it will affect the world in a positive way.  That’s what makes you a beautiful person.”

The CD, Serve3, and “Imagine There’s No Hunger” merchandise will be available to buy at Hard Rock locations around the world starting November 4.
