These days, she splits most of her time between the States and England, where the press is engaged in a love-hate relationship with her. A chatty, fast-talking Stone talked about the situation while taking a breather in LA.
QUESTION: Are you on the road right now?

ANSWER: No, I’m not. (giggling). I’m just here. I have secret things going on.

Q: You do have a lot coming up.

A: I was touring all last year. Now I’ve got a South American tour coming up, and America and Europe. Other than that, I’m chilling. :D

Q: Do you like life on the road?

A: I love playing my songs and getting a good reaction from the crowd. But traveling? Yeah, that sucks (expletive). What can you really do about it? It’s not really something you can change. I sleep a lot, so maybe it’s to pretend I’m not on the road? (giggling). Sleeping takes up a lot of time.

Q: Do you do anything to make hotels feel more like home?

A: I light candles. If I’m allowed, I take my dogs. I’ve got a Rottweiler and a poodle. I love animals.

Q: You’re back and forth between the United States and England so much. Are the two countries that different?

A: Oh yeah! English people are very polite. Americans are very straightforward – not rude, but they just have different manners and a different way of speaking. If somebody knocks into you on the street in New York, it’s ‘What the (expletive)?’ In England, it’s ‘I’m so sorry that you knocked into me.’ They’re both great. One side is just overly honest, and being overly honest is like my favorite thing in the world. I have a truth obsession and I can’t say lies. But I also love politeness, so there.

Q: I know our food portions our bigger than the British.

A: You all eat so much food! (giggling) Oh, yeah. And, you can’t make tea. It’s not hard, but it’s like you all can’t wait for the kettle to boil all the way through. You must let it warm through the tea bag.

Q: And the British don’t like iced tea.

A: No, they hate it. But I love it. I love iced teas and iced coffees. I’m turning into a Yank.

Q: Now, don’t the British media hate when British celebrities come to the United States and get American-ized?

A: Oh, they hate that! They spit on that! The funny thing is there is a difference in England and America when it comes to success. In America, people congratulate you and applaud it. In England, when you’re successful in another country that isn’t England, they don’t applaud you. They bring you down. That did shock me about England. My father brought me up to be a very loyal English woman. I’m very proud of being English, but the tabloid press . . .

Q: It’s different than our press, isn’t it?

A: They just have a lot more fun making fun of you. Like, for instance, my album came in at No. 2 on the American charts. I was so happy. I was like, (expletive), that is amazing. They didn’t even report it in England. They didn’t even say it happened. I don’t know. It’s just a completely different mentality.

Q: Do you know why that is?

A: I don’t know. All I want to do is make a lot of music and work a lot. The world is bigger than England, but it still gets to you. When the album came out, I tried to do all the press in England. As soon as the tabloids started having a go (at me), my record company, being the big fat (expletive) that they are, cancelled all press. Then the tabloids come after me for not doing press!

Q: Happier stuff: You’re doing a chocolate advertisement in England?

A: Oh yes. I love Cadbury’s chocolate. We should all eat more chocolate. And it’s a really flakey, delicate kind of thing. It’s kind of cool – I’m the new “flake” girl. I was really happy to do it for an English company.

Q: You give the audience flowers?

A: Yes, I like to give them a gift. They’ve come all the way out to see me. It’s a cool thing. I like to thank them.

Q: Your audience is cool, because it’s a little bit of everything.

A: I don’t know how that happened, but it’s the biggest blessing I’ve ever received. Music should never be put into boxes. It’s such a beautiful thing to have it spread as far as it can possibly spread. It’s just something that happened.

Q: Now that you’re 20, are you glad that all the “young White soul prodigy” stories are behind you?

A: That was very weird. In England, it wasn’t an issue. That’s another difference – England is more classist than racist. But here, it was about this little White girl with blonde hair (who sounds like she’s Black). And I never saw color.

Joss Stone’s Lesbian Movie Role

March 27th, 2008

British singer Joss Stone is to take a break from her music career after landing her first major movie role playing a lesbian theme park entertainer. The 20-year-old’s first foray into acting was in 2006 when she was cast as a witch in fantasy epic Eragon.

However, Stone has now been given the chance to take on a more high profile role in quirky British comedy Snappers, which will see her character indulge in a “long, lingering French kiss” with a woman. And the star is convinced her new project may shock some of her fans.

She says, “There are things that are going to really push the boundaries – and that excites me!”

Joss Stone Insists She’s Not Rich

March 24th, 2008

British singer Joss Stone has laughed off reports of her huge wealth, insisting her life as a pop star is less profitable than people think. The hitmaker, 20, has released three albums since rising to fame in 2003, but she admits her bank account is not as big as it is made out to be.

She says, “I see all these fancy sums attached to me and although I have more money than most people my age, it’s nothing like that. My record company gives me a lot to make a new album but I have to spend it on musicians and studios. The only time I make good money is when I’m on tour – but even then I’m having to pay my band and the road crew.”

‘My ex has put me off men’ – More pieces from the Richard Barber’s Interview which wasn’t published in the HelloMagazine

March 23rd, 2008

SHE’S THE GIRL WHO SEEMS TO HAVE EVERYTHING – BUT LOVE HAS LEFT JOSS STONE FEELING BRUISED

Interview by Richard Barber

“You know what?” she confides. “I’d give up fame tomorrow for a solid relationship.”

The 20-year-old singer’s longing for love is easy to understand after her ill-fated first and only experience of romance – with American songwriter Beau Dozier.

“Looking back now, I wonder if it really was love between Beau and me,” Joss admits.

“I think it may just have been deep infatuation based on lust.”

The pair met while they were writing tracks together for her second album. Beau was 25 and Joss was just 16.

“It would have been better if Beau and I had become friends first, but I fancied him rotten!” she explains.

“Then the bloom goes off the passion and you see things more clearly. The way he treated me broke my heart. ”

But love, as Joss found out to her cost, is one area of her life that she can’t control. And she is used to being in control.

After finding huge success in her teens, she was just 18 when she took charge of her £10million fortune after firing her manager mother.

But the reasons for the professional split have never been made public.

Finding her feet as an international businesswoman must seem like child’s play for Joss, compared with the complex world of dating.

Not that she’s against the idea of falling in love again – it’s just that she’s wary.

“I can’t trust men,” she says.

“Loss of trust is probably the biggest sacrifice I’ve suffered for being in the public eye.

“But I do trust my two dogs, my music and my mum.”

So what will she look for in a man? “He has to be nice to his mum,” says Joss.

“I know that sounds like a cliché, but I’ve discovered along the way that the guys who are mean to their mums are mean to you.”

Joss’ single status could change at any moment, and she knows it. So what kind of a girlfriend would she be?

“I think I’m a good girlfriend,” she says, with a broad grin.

“I like to look after my man. I like to cook and clean. I’m very loving, I hug a lot, and I like being loved.”

For all that, Joss takes a cynical view of marriage.

Her parents, Wendy and Richard, split in 2004 after 20 years of marriage and three children.

“I feel no urge to be a married woman,” she says.

“But I do feel the urge to be in love, to be in a committed relationship and to have lots of children.

“I want to be in love spiritually. But contractually? I don’t think so.”

Meeting The One is never easy, but fame makes it even harder, according to Joss.

“If someone’s nice to me, I can’t tell if they’re interested in me for who I am or how I am,” she admits.

“It’s made me a bit paranoid.”

When it comes to fashion, Joss’ ever-changing look has been criticised.

She’s done girlie, spiky, sexy and grungy, and has dyed her hair blue, purple and red in recent years.

“I don’t really have a ‘style’,” she explains, “and that’s the way I like it. I have one golden rule – never limit yourself to two colours.

“I have to be careful though, because I’m almost 6ft in my bare feet and sometimes, when I’m all dressed up, I think I look like a transvestite!”

As image-conscious as Joss is, staying stick thin has never been a preoccupation.

For her latest project as the new Cadbury Flake girl, she reckons her curvy figure has been an asset.

“They chose me because I’m so normal!” she exclaims.

“I’m not one of those girls who survives on a lettuce leaf.

“I think it’s much more beautiful to have a bit of flesh on you.”

And so say all of us…
